Stephen C. McEvoy (Belmont)'s profile

AMIGOS Partners with Tufts University to Create Virtual

Based in Belmont, Massachusetts, Stephen C. McEvoy serves as vice president, general counsel and assistant secretary, as well as director of business development at Abiomed, Inc. Outside of his professional endeavors, Stephen "Steven" C. McEvoy of Belmont is involved in community service. One of his earliest engagements with the community was in 1980 when he volunteered for the Amigos de las Americas (AMIGOS) in Paraguay.

AMIGOS is a non-profit organization that provides young people between the ages of 17 and 22 in Latin America with authentic volunteer and immersion programs. Just recently, AMIGOS forged a partnership with Tufts University’s Tisch College of Civic Life for the creation of the Civic Action Gap Semester. The program will provide high school graduates from anywhere across the globe with opportunities to earn college credit while exploring social changes, volunteering in civic activities, and engaging with the community.

AMIGOS and Tufts University have been collaborating for the past six years. Through AMIGOS’ Gap Program and Tufts University’s 1+4 Bridge Year Program, many students have been exposed to social issues that inspire them to take action. However, the global health crisis deterred this year’s Gap Program. The Civic Action Gap Semester is AMIGOS’ and Tufts University’s innovative solution so that the Gap Program can continue amidst the COVID crisis.

Through the Civic Action Gap Semester, students will have the opportunity to offer virtual volunteer work with a community organization. An online community of peers will allow the students to take action on social issues relating to food security, public health and social equality, and justice. Each student works with a career mentor throughout the gap experience.
